Southwest Greenway Art Walk - Inside Out Detroit Walking Tour & DIA Art. Join us for a walk through the Southwest Greenway Art Walk in Detroit and discover how public art can bring a community space to life. This Inside Out Detroit walking tour highlights artwork placed throughout the area and shows how the pieces connect with their surroundings. The tour gives viewers a chance to experience art outside the traditional museum setting while exploring a local Detroit neighborhood and learning more about the ideas behind this community art project.
- The Inside Out program from the Detroit Institute of Arts has been growing for several years and brings artwork from the museum into communities. In this tour, Colleen McNamara, a community engagement manager at the DIA, explains how the program works and how communities can become part of it. The program gives people the opportunity to experience well-known artwork in places they already live, work, walk, and gather, making art more accessible to everyone.
- One of the interesting parts of the Southwest Greenway Art Walk is how the artwork was selected to fit the space around it. The DIA worked with community partners to choose pieces that made sense within the setting. Instead of simply viewing art inside a gallery, visitors can walk from one piece to another and experience the artwork as part of the neighborhood. QR codes on the artwork labels also help visitors discover other pieces along the full art trail.
- The tour also gives viewers a reason to visit the Detroit Institute of Arts and see more of the artwork in person. Some of the pieces featured in the Inside Out program may not currently be on display inside the museum, but the DIA planned to reopen its newly reinstalled modern and contemporary galleries on November 15. Visitors can explore the museum and take advantage of free general admission for residents of the Tri-County area while discovering more of Detroit's art and culture.
- Art Walk is more than a simple art display. It is a way to explore Detroit, discover public artwork, and see how museums and local communities can work together. If you enjoy art, Detroit history, walking tours, or community projects, this experience offers a different way to connect with the city. Come along for the tour and see how art can become part of everyday places and create new ways for people to explore their community.
