Why People Questioned My Identity as a Child - Growing Up in a White World. In this short video, I share a real story about growing up in a white world as a biracial child. I was raised mostly by my mother, who is white, and I spent most of my time in places where people did not look like me. From a young age, I could feel that I was different. It was not something I had to think about deeply. It was something I experienced every day through how people looked at me and spoke to me.
- At school and in public places, people often questioned who I was. They would ask if I was adopted or wonder how I was related to my mother. These questions were not always said in a kind way. Even when people were just curious, it made me feel uncomfortable. I started to notice that other children did not get these same questions, and that made me feel even more different.
- I remember looking at other families and seeing how children looked like their parents. That made me question myself more. I didn’t understand why my situation felt so different. These small moments added up over time and created a feeling of not fully belonging. It was not just one moment, but many small experiences that shaped how I saw myself as a child.
- When I visited my father, things felt different. In that space, I didn’t feel questioned in the same way. But in my everyday life, especially at school and in my community, I was constantly reminded that I stood out. The early message I received was that being different was not seen as something positive, and that feeling stayed with me for a long time.
- This video shares a real part of growing up biracial and how early experiences can shape identity. Many people may relate to feeling different or not fully accepted.
