How African Dance Empowers Women - Audrey Davis-Dunning on Women’s Empowerment

How African Dance Empowers Women - Audrey Davis-Dunning on Women’s Empowerment.
What does it mean to feel confident, embrace your body, and live life without asking for permission? In this episode of Women of Color and Intimate Conversation, host Deneen L. Garrett welcomes Audrey Davis-Dunning, founder of Get Your Goddess, to discuss women’s empowerment through African dance and personal development. Audrey shares how she learned to see her body for what it can do rather than how it looks.

- Audrey explains how African dance changed the way she thinks about her body, confidence, and personal growth. Through movement, live drumming, music, and self-reflection, women can learn to express themselves and feel more comfortable in their own skin. It teaches women how to take up space, stand confidently, and express their true feelings. These lessons can also help women speak up in meetings, give presentations, and advocate for themselves. When women focus on what their bodies can do instead of how they look, they can develop a healthier relationship with themselves and build lasting self-confidence.

- Women must stop making themselves smaller to please others. Through her Get Your Goddess organization, she combines African dance with personal development to help women recognize their worth and live with confidence. Movement can change your energy and help you move forward when you feel stuck. Challenge negative thoughts about their appearance, celebrate their bodies, and stop hiding from photographs or important moments because of insecurity.

- Her Junior Goddess program, which helps young women aged 13 and older develop confidence, leadership, and self-respect. Through lessons on power, beauty, movement, music, and achievement, she encourages girls to recognize their potential before self-doubt becomes a barrier. Representation matters, and seeing confident women can give younger generations permission to embrace their own identities. Traditional African dance includes its rhythms, cultural practices, and community connections. Her work reminds us that empowerment is not only about personal success.

- You do not need everyone's approval to follow your passion, express your creativity, or build something meaningful. If you are exploring African dance, starting a business, developing a new skill, or learning to love yourself, you can take the first step today. Audrey also offers a free online African Joy dance class on the 17th of every month, welcoming people of different backgrounds and abilities. Visit getyourgoddess.com to learn more.
