Why You Forget Your Best Ideas & How to Remember Them - Document Your Growth. Have you ever had a great idea and then completely forgotten it later? Our brains do not keep every thought ready for us to access at any moment. Ideas that do not feel urgent can easily move into the background. That is why writing things down can be so useful. Instead of trusting your memory to hold every idea, you can create a place to keep your thoughts, lessons, and experiences so you can return to them whenever you need them.
- Writing down your ideas is not only about remembering them. It can also become a record of your personal journey. The guest explains how his books became a way to document what he was learning and how he was growing over time. Looking back at your own notes can help you see how much you have changed, what you have learned, and which ideas are still important to you as you continue moving forward.
- Another reason to document your experiences is that your lessons may help someone else. Create shortcuts for other people by sharing what you have learned along the way. A mentor had helped him avoid certain mistakes, and he wanted to offer that same kind of value to others. Your experiences may contain lessons that someone else needs, even if you do not realize their value when you first write them down.
- Great mentors cannot teach you everything. His mentor had years of experience as an artist and could share valuable lessons, but there were still parts of building a career and creating a space that had to be learned through personal experience. That is an important part of growth. Learn from people who have gone before you, but also pay attention to your own experiences and document the lessons you discover.
